Ghode Jatra festival has a myth related to it. It is said that the Kathmandu people once killed a demon called Tundi who lived in the areas around Tundikhel. They buried him in the place called Tundikhel Showgrounds. It is believed that the demon may come alive if he is not trampled by the horses’ feet once in every year. So on these grounds the Nepalese army performs various stunts on the horseback to crush the evil spirit. It is also believed that if the horses run fast on the grounds, the spirit of the demon is destroyed more easily.

The last day is the wildest, youths covered with red vermillion powder roam the streets as inviting targets.
